September 2008, Yiorgos Hadjinikos

They have spoken about Giorgos Hadjinikos:

"He belongs absolutely to the first row of his generation and has the special ability to stand out at the same time as a soloist player, as a director of an orchestra and choir and as an educator”.

Carl Orff

----------

“Dear Mr Hadjinikos …our acquaintance has been for me the most pleasant surprise that could happen to me.
That is because I had the opportunity to appreciate deeply your music and your position towards it and because
as a person you have shown to me the most glowing picture of the modern musician, young, with conscience
and completely responsible…”

Manos Hadjidakis

------------

“…a remarkable capacity to capture the essence of the style that he performs, a constantly present individuality…”

Dimitris Mitropoulos

-----------

It is a great honour for us that Yiorgos Hadjinikos gave an exceptionally interesting interview to L. Mitropoulos, which is cited below.

  • First, I would like to point out that it’s a great honour and pleasure for Radio Art to have an interview with you.

It is also my pleasure to talk with people who contribute to the culture of our country.

  • What is the meaning of art for educating people?

Basic, because by activating the inner sensitivity, it ploughs the inner dynamic and then all education in general flourishes. Of course we are speaking of Art with a capital A.

  • What is good music and how does it ennoble man?

That which awakes devotion in man’s ennoblement and enriches each and every one around within himself with what is offered.

  • Is it true that great works of art are a result of the mind and soul visiting the world of fantasy?

Exactly. The greater a work of art is, the more fabulous the amalgam of all the above is.

  • Is music and art in general in danger due to the progress made in fields of technology up to the point where this is used in music?

It depends on the way and the purpose with which it is used. If by the help of technology great interpretations
are being recorded, then it offers something valuable. Much less of course when it beautifies mediocre or inadequate performances by upgrading them technically.

  • What is happiness?

To have the privilege of awakening and especially inspiring happiness around you!

  • Tell me about an experience where you thought you reached happiness.

When I felt that I achieved something like that.

  • Do you believe in what we call talent?

I believe deeply that everyone has within himself somewhat of a core.

  • With what must someone combine talent to achieve what he wants?

This depends not on what I believe but on what he wants.

  • What can kill talent, genius?

Talent cannot be killed. It is simply wasted when he who has it, takes advantage of it in a way that he becomes its victim, instead of cultivating it with humbleness and devotion to raise himself and his listeners. If we are talking about a musical genius, the luck of having a truly great teacher is of extreme importance. A teacher who instead of simply taking advantage of his student’s talent, can found providently within him all that which he will later on need during his adolescence. That is the reason why so few children prodigies end up being great personalities.

  • The more a genius someone is, the more opportunities he has of reaching God?

I decry that. Even the poorest in mind, by saving a fellowman with a good word, with a simple gesture, with any action can reach God. On the other hand, even if the greatest genius is used to destroy nature and his fellowmen, will never reach God.

  • What is the role of an artist today? Do people today need art more than in the past?

Most needful than ever. Because by discovering it first inside him, he can cultivate around him the ability of using it in a positive way with which one can be afloat as an individual in the ocean of consummation which unwillingly is in favor of today’s universality.

  • I would like to thank you very much Mr Hadjinikos

The pleasure is mine Mr Mitropoulos, I wish Radio Art to further promote and cultivate all of the above.
